PROGRAM WITH PENELOPE
Code Something Great
Program with Penelope started as a free 7-week after-school coding class and expanded to a summer camp! Students in grades 3-8 will have the opportunity to learn new coding skills! The class is in-person in Manhattan or on Zoom. Classes will be taught in Scratch, an educational programming language developed at MIT, Python, and HTML/CSS. Classes are project-based and each coder will walk away with at least 3 new awesome projects!Â

"Your classes were a great introduction to Python and Scratch for anyone wanting that little push to finally start learning Python regularly!" - Student from Egypt

"You answered my question really well and went through everything as many times as needed and didn't mind re-explaining! You're really fun and great to work with!" - Student from Egypt

"It was a pleasure to attend your lessons. The lessons were great and very interesting because you can explain things very well. I am really glad that I had the opportunity to attend your lessons!" - Student from Sweeden

ABOUT ME
I am a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania in the Jerome Fisher Program in Management & Technology, studying computer science and innovation and entrepreneurship. When I first started coding I was very intimidated. I thought there was so much to learn that I would never be able to finish a project. My experience at Kode With Klossy changed that. Kode With Klossy is an all-girls coding camp where I learned to program with HTML, CSS, and Javascript. I knew after that experience that I wanted to pursue coding. I started taking weekly classes at CodeWizards in 2020 where I programmed with Python, SQL, and HTML. Also in 2020, I participated in an artificial intelligence boot camp program by Inspirit AI where I built an algorithm to detect lung cancer in X-Rays. In the summer of 2021, I took a coding class at Stanford University where I deepened my knowledge of Python. At my high school, I took AP Computer Science in Java.

In addition to coding, I play competitive travel softball, love to dance and babysit.

I wanted to create my own coding class to introduce kids at a young age to coding in an exciting and inviting way. I decided to teach in Scratch because it is user-friendly, you can create fun projects very quickly, and it introduces the ideas needed for higher-level coding.
FAQ
DOES A STUDENT NEED PREVIOUS CODING EXPERIENCE?
No! All levels are welcomed and will be challenged!
WHAT DOES A STUDENT NEED TO BRING TO CLASS?
Every student needs to bring a Mac, Windows, or Chromebook laptop to class. We use Scratch 3.0 which requires a relatively new web browser: Chrome or Mobile Chrome 63 or higher, Edge 15 or higher, Firefox 57 or higher, Safari or Mobile Safari 11 or higher. Internet Explorer is not supported. Students can connect to our wifi for free.
HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE IN THEÂ CLASS?
There are only 7 spots available in each class.
WHAT DAY AND TIME ARE THE CLASSES?
The classes will be once a week in the winter on Mondays and the time is TBD.
WHERE IS THE CLASS?
The class will be held in downtown Manhattan or on Zoom.
IS THIS REALLY FREE?
Yes! I've been so inspired by coding that I want to volunteer my time to help other kids get excited as well.
IS SCRATCH AÂ REAL PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE?
Yes! Scratch is an educational, visual programming language developed by the MIT Media Lab. Scratch promotes computational thinking and problem-solving skills. A paper by Harvard researchers analyzed the final grade in an introductory computer science class across ten thousand undergraduates at 118 US colleges. They found that students whose first language, pre-college, was graphical, like Scratch, had higher grades than students whose first language was textual.
WILL THERE BE HOMEWORK?
There will be no formal homework but if a student does not finish a project in class they would be expected to finish it at home because we build on concepts week after week.
